    LR D2 TD5 ECU Tune

    Hi Guys,

I am looking at wanting a tune done to my 2004 Disco.
At the moment its stock, but I have ordered the decat and straight through centre pipe.
I am wanting to know any reputable tuners in Melbourne. I live in Shepparton so I feel the best place would be to go to Melbourne to get a tune completed. I am after a mild tune I guess just to get the TD5 running in top shape with the mods I am willing to do. My disco is my daily driver and I also use it for work doing approx 400km per week in it. I am also looking at the EGR removal as well.
I have been doing some reading on injector code matching in the ECU with the nanacom units. Is this something that the tuners do as part of the tune? I was looking into Alivetuning but I see they exist in the UK.

Any help would be great, I have searched through google and the forums but cant find anything specific with ECU tunes and dyno tunes for the Disco. We dont have any tuners here in Shepparton that can tune the TD5 on the dyno.. or even touch the ECU.

    Thanks in advance. Kane

Ha mate triumph rover spares, I think they are in Vic and Bruce Davis performance are in Sydney. I have a TRS remap and yes it made a difference but they are a bit mild for my liking and like to stick to stick boost pressures and exhaust sizes. I have a 01 td5, as you can't flash that ECU I bought a flash-able ECU from them with a new tune on it. I asked about exhaust and boost and they said not needed, well not long after I had warped manifold, I put it down to higher EGT's as tuning induces more fuel but they don't increase boost to compensate for the extra fuel. I have since upped the boost and it has been ok since. I am still chasing more power so will be talking to Bruce Davis Performance soon I think.

A warped exhaust manifold is not something I really want to deal with!

I read somewhere that if you can hear your turbo in your discovery that the exhaust manifold is leaking? I have excellent hearing and I can hear the turbo spool up when accelerating. It's pretty quiet but it's there. This is my first Disco so I am not sure what is "normal"

    Welcome to the forum,
Is Tombie still around? He was on this forum and use to do a remap of the ECU with good results.
Les Richmond in Thomas town do a remap - they do not do it themselves but send the ECU out to get done - aprox 3 day turn around.
Also talk to Ritters Automotive in Burwood, if they can not help you they will point you in the right direction.

The 2004 Td5 will have a flashable ECU so you only need to have access to a Nanocom to be able to upload a tuned ECU map.

There are a number of specialists in europe who can provide tuned map files:

td5 INSIDE The ultimate solutions for remapping TD5´s

    ECU Remapping - Alive Tuning

Remap & Chip Tuning from bell auto services | Diesel performance tuning and economy remap chip tuning for Landrover Defender Discovery TD5 Puma TDV6 TDV8

IRB Developments - Diesel Tuning and More

fwiw triumph rover spares are based in Adelaide.

    cheers

Turbo spool is normal. It sounds like a squeaky belt when the manifold leaks.

Then maybe a TD5 was not the right choice because it pretty much happens to them all . You could try Ivan at Clarke Automotive (02 6024 6664) in Wodonga - I live in Alexandra and prefer to go to him for mechanical work than Melbourne. You can also get a map remotely sent to you if you have a nanocom or the like - I cant do this with my D2 as mine is a 2000 model and doesn't have a flashable ecu like yours.

My theory on the manifold warping (for what its worth) is that it is more due to the weight hanging off the manifold than other things. If you look under the bonnet of any other 4wd the turbo nearly always has a support bracket to take the weight off the manifold. In the TD5 the turbo, manifold and exhaust dont have any support and all hang off the manifold studs which puts heaps of pressure on the studs. Someone should come up with a support bracket to keep the weight off the manifold. Just my 10 cents though....

Thanks for all the comments guys. Even though I am IT savy I am not really wanting to try and modify my ECU settings with a nanacom. I would like to take it somewhere where they can tune it, on a dyno preferably. I dont like the idea of just wacking tunes on cars and hoping for the best. Also has anyone had their ECU firmware version updated when getting services? I know LR releases updates for problems they find in the ECU.. bugs etc.

In defence of the TRS tune. I also have a 2001 TD5.
This has been in the car for approximately 6 years, in this time i have done a bit of towing of a 2.5 ton trailer.
To date no problem with exhaust manifold, so i would not say that they are a cause of exhaust manifold problems, any tune could contribute to that.

Someone will correct me if I am wrong but I don't think many people have the correct machine/computer combo to TD5 dyno tuned landies in Australia, hence we are stuck with ECU changes. Earlier models without computers are easier to dyno though (my old D1 had a dyno tune done and I was very happy). You are fairly safe with the majority of the ECU tunes around and many of the tuners will custom map the tune to your requirements. They do heaps of them so I dont really think dyno tuning is required. I have a Davis Landy chip in my non-flashable-ECU'd-2000-Disco. I find the tune great but I know a few people that have the same tune that have gone back to get a slightly different tune from them and they are happy to help.

With a nanocom you can actually get a tune from someone like TD5 Alive in England, upload it and if you find that it blows a bit too much smoke or something else you can get changes done by TD5 alive for free over the net. Allows you to get the tune right for you and you only pay once.

I may be completely wrong about custom tunes on Landies on dynos though .....
