    Question 24 vs 12 volt starter motor, Military Lightweight Series 3

    Hi All,
    Any one able to tell me what makes a 24v starter a 24v starter? Just wondering if any simple wiring change can alter it to 12v? I've used it as 24v in a vehicle converted to 12v for years, but it does rowrrowrrowr pretty slow! Or if anyone wants to swap for a 12v or has a 12v one kicking around? Series 3 petrol 1974.

    The Internal windings of the armature & field coils are what makes it 24v operation.

    As you know a 24v starter will work on 12v although slower. A standard 12v civilian starter should fit, is it inertia type with external solenoid or pre engaged with the solenoid as part of the starter motor?

    You can also have the armature and field coils rewound to suit 12v if you like.

    It's the inertia type that gets stuck when you forget about the wading plug!
    Even worse I guess when it's slow!
