'02 Defender 110 - Parts Number Confirmation Needed

    G'day all!

I popped the extension housing off of my gearbox on the weekend, after a loss of 5th and reverse gears, and it was no surprise when the sheared layshaft fell out...

The 5th gear on the layshaft has two broken teeth as well, though the output shaft gear looks okay.

I'm trying to narrow down the layshaft part number I need, using Microcat. My box is a suffix L R380, but have come up with the following two layshaft part numbers:
    SHAFT-LAY, SUFFIX L, (G)Suffix- To: (V)1A622306 Number: TUO100370

    SHAFT-LAY, SUFFIX L, (G)SUFFIXL- Number: TUO100100

I've found both part numbers while searching online... does anybody know which is the correct one for my gearbox?

Looking forward to my first gearbox repair...

    Thanks!
    Michael

    Thumbs up

Can't tell you, but the hint is in the vehicle number in the first layshaft quoted. If your VIN is higher than the number quoted in the first example, the second one is more likely the one to fit your vehicle.

Good luck with the rebuild. It's not a hard job, just fiddly and painstaking.

    Cheers

Of course... checked the VIN, and it points me to using the TUO100100 part number...

    Thanks!

Thanks guys - I have started communication with Dave re: parts pricing.

Just have to get the gearbox open now.

How tight is the oil seal collar? I bought myself a $200 hydraulic gear puller set yesterday, after the standard cheap puller I already had wouldn't even look at it.

Tightened to maximum pressure by hand (instructions say not to use anything other than maximum hand pressure on the hydraulic winder), and she still won't budge. Some use of heat didn't help either...

They can be a bloody nightmare.... When I pulled mine apart I had to use an angle grinder with cutting disc to split it.

Subsequently the new one I refitted I managed to remove with a large puller, when I had to pull it apart again.

They don't appear to be hardened which I think is half the issue as they seem to bind on the shaft.

    good luck!

I'll take the box and collar that came with the puller set over to a mate's 20t hydraulic press tomorrow morning. If that doesn't work, the grinder will be coming out...
