I used Caltex Delo 400 15w/40 mineral oil in both my TDi and TD5 and never had an issue, the TD5 did well over 100,000ks on this oil and never used any oil between services. I did change the oil every 10,000ks but have no doubt the oil was still good.Quote:

TD5's have a particulate oil filter (rotor filter) which require specific grade oils.
All companies have good quality oils and will generally recommend the correct oil for the specified vehicled. There websites are best for finding this out easily.
I don't think that any or them would recommend 15w-40 for an engine with a particulate filter (specifically TD5). Usually 5w-30 cooler climate, or 5w-40 warmer climate (above 30c regularly).
Check there websites if you like a particular brand and then go shopping.
Pretty sure Rick130 did a massive oils recommendation breakdown regarding all of the engine/driveline oils. Might be in 'the good oil'.
It is worth having a read of just so you can figure out what is right for you and do some price comparisons. Also watch the repco and supercheap catalogues is you don't want to visit the oil distributors and buy 20L drums.
Someone stated that oils and filters are cheap. Compared to an engine rebuild yes, but when doing it every 5000km it can become costly if you choose to buy most of the recommended synthetic oils and good quality filters.
Things may have changed a bit in the oil world since the owners manuals for td5's were printed, so check with the oil manufacturer. They will want to get it right to cover there behind.

Oh and I use Caltex Havoline fully synthetic C3 5w-30 or 5w-40 on my TD5 which is available from the caltex oil distributor for about 145.00 per 20L drum. Way cheaper than any retail outlet.
