    Oils

I have a 300 tdi Disco and have just bought a td5 Disco and was wondering if it is possible to use the same engine and gear oil in both vehicles and what grade oil would you recommend.

    No!!!!!

    Very different characteristic engine oils.....

TDI engine oil will KILL a TD5 very quickly..

Gear oils may be the same, depending on what you have....

Penrite HPR Diesel 5 is a great engine oil for the TD5 (and quite affordable)

i am pretty sure that the td5 uses lower grade engine oil then the 300tdi. penrite is the best oil for its price

For engine oil the Td5 manual says 10W/40 for temp range of -10C to 50C.
    for the Tdi300 it says15W/40.

SWMBO's D2a uses Castrol Magnatec and my Defender uses Castrol RX Super.

I doubt that interchanging the oils will result in the end of life as we know it, but unless you get a 200 litre drum of one or the other for free I'd stick with what it says in the book.

Im Running Fuchs TITAN GT1 PRO C-3 5W30 in My 2001 Td5 Discovery. its not cheap RRP for 20L Drum is about $310. It was the best quality oil in my opinion that I stock and it was recommended for the Vehicle by Fuchs.

I also had Valvoline SynPower 5W40 which is about $65 for 5 Liters if i didn't have the Fuchs oil handy would have used it as its also recommend for my Vehicle by Valvoline.

I have always found if an oil Manufacture recommends it then its more than ok to use. But the other issue is if the wrong oil have been used previous then it could cause issues with mixing etc. I would normally use a flush before i service a car i have never seen before.

Also i can not comment on Penrite engine oil as i have never used any of there engine oils before. But it does seem good value at $70-$80 for 10 Litres.

    Cheers

tdi i suspect uses a 15w-40 mineral oil and has change intervals of 5-10,000km.
td5 requires at minimum a semi synthetic (penrite hpr5) or fully synthetic (mobil1, etc), this is due to oil changes being 20,000km intervals. a mineral oil would break down too much over this period to maintain required lubricity.

sure run your td5 on mineral oil but would suggest making the oil change intervals shorter and then you may aswell have bought a nissyota.

disco manual gearbox likes penrites manual syn 75 and transfer and diffs us a 75-90 (again penrite transaxle 75 works well).

regarding the engine, oil is cheap and so are filters. So changing at 5k intervals is no problem. It certainly helps with keeping an eye on things and adds a bit of protection if you are only doing short trips in your vehicle. It also means that all my grease nipples get some love every 5k.

I run Castrol RX Super in my 2.8tgv (very similar to Tdi) But I do run synthetic in diffs, trans and gearbox due to towing

TD5 must have fully synthetic oil, preferably 5w30,for engine.I always changed mine every 20k or 12 months unless i was doing a lot of small runs.I didn't do any towing.

For transmissions & drive train, i would stick to specified oils by LR.You must use these oils for long drainage intervals.

Earth to Rick130,where is he these days?? the oil guru...
