suggest you just replace it, and I would advise anyone with a viscous clutch fan thats done more than 150,000 kms to just do it.
Mine on my V8 Disco was giving me grief from about 150,000 kms and I spent a lot of money over 3 years chasing an overheat problem not knowing it was the fan all along. If it wasnt for my engine oil pressure gauge I would never have picked it up. Unfortunately I was up around Exmouth when I worked it out.
The clutch wears out, usually through loss of fluid past the shaft seal, and it can happen slowly, or suddenly.
Its virtually impossible to find any guide on the internet on how to check them, but once you see a fresh one working its all very clear that the old one wasnt doing its job.
If the fan is a separate unit have a good look at the base of each balde and you will probably see hairline cracks.
Check with good Landrover parts suppliers and they will probably have access to OEM clutches and fans at reasonable prices.
I to thought i had faulty fan turned out not to be but when asking around i was told you can buy the fluid and some how fill them and away you go. This is only if there is no major play or binding etc.
Interested to know if any one has tried it before.

Yes I came across this while I was researching the issue with mine, but if you think about it, why has the fluid leaked out? It has leaked past a shaft seal which naturally wears like any other lip seal, so replacing the fluid gets it working but doesnt 'fix' the cause of the leak. So what I'm saying is that the viscous clutch units have a finite life, and if you are going to the trouble of dismantling your fan cowl and whatever else to get a clear shot at it you may as well just fit a good replacement OEM unit and be done with it.
One thing to be careful of is the inner face of the radiator, so put a nice thick bit of cardboard against it as soon as you can to prevent accidental damage to the soft bits.
