    TD5 Rotor lid filter drill/tap

    Hi People.
    Servicing my pair of TD5s.
Last service I had issues with damaged threads on BOTH vehichles rotor filter lids.
Went to rectify today only to find M7 bolts are rare as rocking horse poo,in the country at least.
I have shown my boy the job,he assures me there is enough "meat" in the body of the filter body to go M8.
Hellicoils are out as they arent too available down here either. If necessary I will try and get some.Problem is BOTH vehicles are now laid to rest until fixed.
Thoughts please,40lt of petrol and a match is out as they are in the carport and they will damage the house somewhat
    Thanks
    Andrew

Is the problim the lid or the filter block?

After striping the thread with longer bolts I fitted a helicoil to my filter block(M6).
The lid is drilled out so the bolt slips in.
Doesn't hold the bolt in the lid but I can live with that.
    Cheers, Kyle

    Body Alien man.
I was going to drill/tap the body to 8mm,but dont like the lack of meat left behind.
I believe the fact that they tap the lid causes the striping of the threads, they only need to be a thread out and when it tightens STRIP!!!!.Im very gentle with spanners and alloy

the M6 helicoil kit taps to M8 (or near enough) so theres just enough meat in the housing to get the M8's to thread in properly Providing you use an M8 fine thread.

    But skip that...

shine your torch down the holes and they go straight through so as a stop gap you can just wind a longer bolt in and put a nut on it.

I did put nuts on longer bolts last time, too hard and they obviously wernt tight enough as they are gone.
I couldnt get M6 Helicoils this morning.Ended up with M5 Nutserts which require a 7.2mm pilot hole in ally.It requires using M5 bolts to secure the lid which I dont see as an issue.M6 Nutserts required a 10.2mm hole which I wasnt prepared to risk.
