    Disco S1 CV replacement

Ok, after going to pull away from my son's scool, and finding no movement unless the CDL was engaged, I presumed I had broken a front axle. However the dismantling complete today, and it's actually a CV that has given up the ghost!!!

So it's all out. I have to check that I have all of the pieces yet, and order replacement parts and a couple of seals.

However is there anything else I should be doing while this is all apart? bearings and everything looked pretty good.

I see the swivel pin housings are still EP90, so I have some of that to put back in, no dramas (350ml in each). I presume I pack the CV itself with grease before putting it back in.

Should there be a seal between the diff tube and the swivel housing ? I didn't notice one when I took the shaft out, but I'm not sure why you would seperate them apart from trying to allow water from one into the other. Although there wasn't much if any oil in the swivel, perhaps the cause for the failure.

Anything else I neet to know doing this job?

Have you thought about the option of running the cv's in oil?

The 3rd option for swivel lubrication in the D1 is to use grade 0 grease ( semi fluid ) - I've had success with a 50/50 mix of ordinary grease and Moreys oil stabilizer. Ends up like honey.

One of the things you ought to be doing is checking the swivel preload on re-assembly. A cheap fish scale will do the trick, and remember to measure the preload with the big swivel seal off.

ps There is supposed to be a seal in between the swivel housing and the axle case proper ( mounted in the end of the swivel, accessible when you take the swivel ball off the axle tube) - if you aren't the first owner, then the PO may have removed the seal to run the swivels on oil as Mr Un said. Check up in RAVE on the way it was originally set up

I would have prefered to keep grease in the CV's, but it appears that previous owners have removed the oil seal between the axle tube and swivel housing already. So oil will go in there now once back together, and have it's levels monitored!

i run oil in the swivels and wheel bearings, never had a problem with swivel seals leaking best option in my opinion, also have used the semi fluid grease it seems to work well to
