    Replacement Intake Ducting

Got all the air box hoses off at the minute.

The ducting that runs from snorkel to the air box is not genuine. It has broken wire reinforcement sticking out of it in places so Im not confident that it is water proof. The good thing about the old ducting is that it is terminated with big rubber moulded ends for clamping to the snorkel and air box.

Looking at replacement ducting they seem to be cut to length so the wire re-enforcement goes right to the end..

At the moment I'm looking at something like this:
60mm 2 3/8" Orange Silicone Ducting Flexible Induction Air Intake Pipe Hose 0.5M | eBay

may seem like a stupid question but can you just clamp it between or over the ribs to get a water tight seal or do I need to find a suitable length of ducting that has rubber ends for clamping? If so where to get them?

It sounds like your existing hose is an old RRC EFI inlet hose, they look like that (with the moulded ends). I would suggest you visit a Super*heap or similar and check out their silicone turbo hoses. Properly clamped they definitely seal 100%. I bought a few once when constructing an intake, their range of angles and diameters was not bad.

Its a disco 200tdi in a 1989 LR90 so where they sourced their hoses from I dont know.
So your suggesting a ridged silicone pipe arrangement with various bends and connectors? 60MM pipe and a wiggly 70cm to travel it might be expensive and overly complicated. Im still keen on ducting..

Perhaps I could use small lengths of silicone pipe to terminate the ducting. Clamp the ducting onto the silicon pipe with plenty of silicone sealant. Then I would have silicon pipe ends to clamp. Necessary you think?

Ah yes I've seen those hoses on LR diesels too. As for bendy piping, exhaust tube with a suitable bend or two often needs only two rubber end connectors to work. As for ducting, the internal ridged stuff is suitable for the dirty side of an air cleaner, I wouldn't use it on the clean side myself unless you took extra care with the removeable ends. Short steel joiners to smooth hose, plenty of sealant on the joins. Or haunt a wreckers looking for 4 cyl EFI intake hoses.

I ended up getting some ducting and sealing some silicone joiners to each end:

1m silicone ducting (70mm internal diameter)
    2 x silicone joiners (64mm internal diameter)
1 x alloy pipe joiner (64mm external diameter)
    2 x t-bolt pipe clamps
1 roll of silicone self fusing tape.

    • Cut the silicone ducting to size.
    • Cut the alloy pipe joiner in two
    • Inserted half pipe joiner into each silicone joiner to give a rigid clamp point.
    • Greased up the ends of each silicone joiner so I could get the ducting over the top (very tight fit)
    • Used the silicone tape to seal the ducting to the joiner.
    • Clamped over the sealed connection so that no chance ducting can be pulled off the joiner. (maybe not required, silicone tape fuses very well)

Ended up with ducting that is water tight, has silicon ends for clamping and they are the perfect length.. happy.

    Here are a few pics.

Snip off any protruding wire coils and wrap liberally with Duct tape, works and it's cheap, like me, Regards Frank.
