Thread: Chassis in need of repair

Alas the chassis on my dear old Series III is looking a little worse for wear and it is in need of a new rear crossmember and the front bumb irons need repair/replacement.

Sourcing the replacement parts is not that hard, the problem that I am finding is finding someone willing/competant to undertake the work given that the rust has got into the spring hangers so the leaf springs have to be undone.

Can anyone point me in the direction to who may be able to assist in the Perth area (preferably in the northern suburbs)?

I appreciate it is a bugger of a job but I am too time-poor/don't know how to use a welder/don't have enough garage space/don't trust myself to do it right to do it myself.

Can anyone assist?

You may want to look into car restorers who should be more used to this type of work and more particular about doing it right than your average welder. Just as long as you don't run into the Dodgey Brothers restorers that inevitably exist.

These repairs aren't very hard to do, but it must be done very accurately. Usually the rear body has to come off to get the top welding done and for any plating that may be necessary.

You should first look at the other common rust areas so that you can be sure the chassis is worth saving. The bulkhead outriggers usually rust at the very bottom where they meet the chassis, so it's worth drilling an exploratory hole there. Another spot is where the bumpstops mount as there is a double layer of steel there.
