    Front alignment/vibration

    Hi all

    I fitted 285/75 16 Mickey Thompson MTZ's on new 16 x 8 steel wheels to my 1998 Defender 130 a few months ago.

Everything was going great.....until about a month ago I took off the front wheels and replaced the brake hoses.

Ever since then, I have a bad front end vibration at 95-100kms. On a really smooth road it's as though I can see the front guards wobbling!. I don't remember this wobble being there before I removed the wheels to change the brake hoses

I re-centered/re-positioned the front wheels and this made a slight difference, but the vibration is still there.

I am chasing a good wheel alignment specialist in Brisbane. I have replaced the entire front end so it is either alignment, lumpy tyre or wheel balance.

Anyone recommend a specialist in Brisbane?

    Thanks heaps

Sounds classic ballence problem to me going by the speeds that it happens. But I can't see how takeing the wheels off and on would change it. First thing I always check tho when something like this's happens is pan hard bolts for tightness and check the tyres for scalloping from worn shocks

Try moving the front wheels to the rear 1 at a time as I suspect its a lost balance weight. Also, on some vehicles a badly out of balance rear wheel can seem to be a front wheel out of balance.

    Thumbs up wobbles

hi ihad the same problem when i fitted new wrangler muddies to my 110 at mt isa
because i was going up through the back of adels grove to get to doomadge didnt notice the wobbles cause i didnt get over 60ks an hour
gotta love that black soil luckey my wifes good with a shovel.
turns out that when the tyres were fitted the camber was wrong had 3 wheel alignments no different then was talking to british offroad
they said to set camber to about 7 deegres negative might pay to give them a ring and ask sure this will solve the problem

Does not sound right ? The camber is not adjustable, and 7 degrees would have the front wheels laying over at a very excessive angle.

    Hi Andrew,

If all you changed was the wheels, and you got the vibration, look at the wheels first. It is possible the wheels went onto a different corner, and that is enough to introduce a vibration.

Next I would check the tyres don't have any run out ( out of round ) and the wheels bearings don't have play. Even brand new tyres will vary dramatically in how round they are, and how much lead is required to balance them. Try the best rim/tyre combinations on the front if you are having issues.

I swapped the wheels front to back diagonally last night and went for a burn down the freeway....vibration still there at around 95 - 100.

I am booking in today to get the wheels re-balanced as a start.

Then I need to find a place to do the wheel alignment - any recommendations in Brisbane?

The place I went to previously did not inspire confidence.

    Cheers

When you get the wheels balanced make sure they use a flange plate set that is the only 4wd rims and tyres should be done...

I have often wonder if an old hub could be set up on the ballencer and the wheel bolted to that

Alignment can't cause shaking. It can cause wander, but that's completely different.
Don't waste money chasing things that aren't going to help.

You said this was a new set of wheels and tyres. If you have the old set of wheels and tyres, fit them and go for a drive. If the shaking is still there, then look hard at the hubs. If the shaking goes, then it's the wheels.
Have you had the wheels spun for a balance check?

I had my work car (not a landrover) shaking enough the other week that your face would jiggle at 100km/h. It was a buildup of mud and stones on the inside of the back rims.
