Any comments on the pros and cons of upgrading the D2 alternator for additional batteries, towing powered trailers etc?
I am sure this has been disscussed to death but i thought i would add what I am upto atm, I have killed my 45 amp original alternator in my stage 1 so i have been looking into getting a higher output one. I have read some other post about ppl adding second hand or new black motor ones, xf falcon ones etc but i have gone for a new 120 amp unit.
Fendt, Deutz KHD 12V 120A Alternator
the model number is ANB217 here is a link to the place i got it.
IT is a little exy but i got a quote from british offroad for a direct replacement for mine and it was $390 for 45 amp again, so I figure an extra 80 amp for $20 less, I can handle that.
hope someone gets some use out of this post I havent fitted it yet should be here tomorrow i will post how it goes and any mods i have to make to get it hooked up

What size alternator has the D2 got? The D1 V8 Alternator is 100amps so if the D2 one is the same then you won't need to touch it.
The 65 amp Bosch unit I stuck in the Rangie to replace the Lucas unit ran LOTS - Charging 2 usually - sometimes 3 batteries, 4 x 100 watt driving lights, plus the normal high beams that now have 100 globes, wipers, heater fan, etc without issue - not sure what more you may need to run. The 100amp in there now with the engine conversion I have just done is well up to the task.

here is what i ended up doing through my own stupidity i broke the front mounting on the original casting impatience will always bring you undone so i made a new one and had to do some cutting and shaving to the cast one to make it work
1. I shaved down where the old mount snapped off so it was flush across
2. I made a u shaped cradle out of steel , 55mm from hole to hole and drilled thru
3. drilled 2 more hole through steel into cast which on the back of the original is hollow and put 2 bolts through to hold in place
Photos sort of show the idea I would remove again to show better but there is one bolt in the cast mount that hides behind the water pump and is a mongrel to get out
