Should be Butyl rubber / Butyl Mastic. Still made by Selleys.
Hi All,
Seeking the name of the type of sealant used in the door tops of a Series 3 1974 Landy. It is tar-like and softens on a hot day. I've seen it before on vintage cars like my Austin Champ. It's not polyurethane and you can squish it around still after nearly 40 years! What is it and can you still get it?
Cheers,
Dave
PS realise there may be a modern alternative by I'm still intrigued by the ID of the old stuff and I'm one of those nuts that would probably buy original cross-ply tyres with bar-grip if I could!

Cheers Langy,
They suspected this at my local hardware but didn't have any. Thanks for the confirmation. I'll have to get some!
Cheers,
Dave

I haven't looked in a manual, but I think it was called "Dum Dum". A list of modern equivalents lists 3M brand weather-strip caulk.

You are correct, it's called . I used to get mine from the Series 2 90/110 Owners club. Not sure if they still sell it.

I did a quick search last night and someone on another forum said that they stopped making it last year. Which wouldn't surprise me.

Still available
Search flea bay for butyl tape.
Bought some recently posted about it here. Works well to seal Landys
3M do not stock it in Oz and min order was $1300

Could you tell me if its the same stuff used around the windscreen glass as I have to replace one, or could I get away with double sided tape?![]()
I would not think so. Not on any recent car anyway. BUT!!! Check this item on fleabay
110893355784 it is correctbtape but says for windscreen. But would e for older car
Modern cars the windscreen is structural and is glued in.
This Dum-Dum or butyl tape, butyl mastic is like a black rubbery putty. It can be run along seams to seal them or pressed into places to form a seal.
I would not glue anything with it as it remains soft and flexible, particularly in hot weather.
