    Plastic Dowels

Well, stripped down the engine and found plastic dowels. A bit off centre, but not too bad. Overall the engine was in pretty good nic. If not for the plastic dowels, probablly would not have had to worry about. Just hope it all goes well and starts & runs properly when it is back in after putting in new clutch and flywheel and fixing leaks in gearbox / trans case. Even the clutch and flywheel was in pretty good nic for 186,000kms.

    Dowel

Injectors before replacing washers and o rings.

    Head seemed all OK.

Good work Craig, and yes, the Torana isn't very well represented in those phtos....

Can we see more of it? Was one of my favourite models. 4.2 or 5 litre?

thanks for that Craig... especially the shot of the plastic dowel... (and others appreciate the Torana apparently)...

Do you know when they actually ceased using the plastic in production ?

Justin, Thanks for your advice doing this, was a little nervous with it being a diesel, but so far pretty straight forward. Most of my previous engine work has been on petrols. Was a bit nervous doing the head bolts in the Land Rover torque up and angle mode, but pretty easy, even without an angle gauge. A bit disconcerting originally though.
Just a tidy up and a couple of bearings in the gearbox and trans case and put all together and back in, maybe next break. Found the fuel reg has a small leak, so will need to get some o rings. If that does not work maybe a new reg or a kit from the UK.
The Torana is pretty ratty, needs a full restore. I have had it since I was 17. It is a 1976 LX SS Hatchback 4.2 litre. This is the next project when funds allow.
    Cheers

I am not sure when they finished using the plastic dowels. Mine is a 2000. Justin would probably know exactly.

the plastic dowels were still fitted to the 2003 manufactured engines, officially though all were gone by 2004, just in time for the TdV6...

    Hi Craig,

Great workspace you have there. Mind me asking what was the reason for the engine being out and stripped?

    Cheers.
