Thread: Help! Leaking power steering fluid.

The tie rod end boot usually has a clip or spring around it to hold it on. A bit of tie wire would do the same trick.

Yeah the seal in your steering box has gone. You will have to pull the box out & take it apart to see if the shaft is servicable or not (sometimes it is sometimes it aint) as where the seal runs sometimes chews out . You can get them rechromed & machined or replaced , also have a good look & see if any metal in the box or broken needle roller cages

Also is the top of the steering box wet (not shown in photos)could just be a loose hose or adjusting nut leaking?

The leak appears to be coming from the sector shaft.
You can remove the steering box, bust some knuckles and swear lots and replace the seals but common wisdom would suggest leaking sector shaft seals occur because of a worn sector shaft such that the "new" seals will soon leak again.

You could just get a new 4 bolt box from the UK for less than a shop would charge to replace the seals, swap them over and be done with the problem.
I would also hazard a guess that a near 20 year old fender steering box would have a fair bit of play in it.

So if it was my call; A new box, new tie rod ends, new control arm bushes, shim up the swivels and you wont believe how the old girl steers... find a willing local AULROian to watch over perhaps - none of the above is rocket science.

I had a similiar problem withthe steering box on my 1995 130.



heres a close up.



Steering fluid was leaking not from around the shaft where the seal is but from where the seal pushes into the cast housing. The red line you can see is the 'Stag' jointing paste I used to fix the seal into the housing.

This fixed the leak here, but it's still 'a work in progress' sealing the input shaft (from steering column) fluid leak.

I bought a seal kit from roverparts, did mine in whilst still in the car. Hardest part was knocking the arm off, rest was easy and hasn't leaked since? (touch wood)

Another vote for a new box. They are pretty cheap at present. I've never found replacing the seal to keep the oil in long enough to justify the work.
