Before I order this thing, is there any reason not to that I can't think of? Like someone else already tried it and it fell apart or something? It looks fine to me and I don't have the months it would take to buy bits and pieces locally and put it all together.

I have one exactly like it under the house. Have had it for 20 years.
Just one problem I had that led me to take it off my old 77 was that with the thermostat, if you were climbing a steep hill immediately after starting, and cooler had emptied overnight, there is a couple of seconds that you lose oil pressure as the thermostat opens and fills the cooler.
Maybe I am a bit anal but I hate a red oil pressure light being on with the engine under load.
I only noticed the phenomenen while climbing steep hills in low range (Brindabellas) immediately after startup.

Thanks, guys. Funnily enough, they do sell a thermostat separately, but you have to cut your lovely new hoses with their crimped ends, (I asked, and the ends are crimped as in the photo, which is good), in order to use jubilee clips to attach the hoses to the thermostat. Which I didn't like. But I don't think I'll need a thermostat up here, and in the middle of winter I'll probably just cover the cooler for early mornings.

I would fit a thermostat, as when I bought my 77 it had the cooler on it, and the oil mist vents in the carbs were completely blocked as were the hoses. I had to drill the crap out. I attributed it to overcooled oil.
You can get a thermostat which is integral to the sandwich fitting on the filter and I think that is a better idea.

No radiator cooler on this, Frank, as it's a carby model, and I'm trying to do as much as I can to cool the thing for use up here.
Rimmer do have these thermostats: Push In Thermostat - Oil Cooler - 1/2 inch Hoses at www.rimmerbros.co.uk and Thermostat - Oil Cooler 5/8 Push-on at www.rimmerbros.co.uk
but having engine oil relying on little jubilee clips doesn't seem too clever. Maybe those heavy-duty ones would be okay.

I would definitely fit a cooling fan/s for low speed work, jubilee clips are OK, I fit 2, one each side of the sealing ridge and then I wire them together, I'll see if I can find a pic of my Auto Trans cooler installation, Regards Frank. P.S. this pic was before I wired them together, just did a figure 8 around the screw bits and twitched up tight, hasn't showed any signs of leaking and pressures are higher than engine oil pressures, Regards Again

Thanks, the way you describe using the clips sounds good. Pics are always welcome, of course. And a 12v fan is a good idea as well. I do have the two aircon fans wired up to a switch on the dash and I think they would do the trick if the cooler was in front of them.

That was quick! I see what you mean. Looks good. One reason I tend to ask lots of questions here is because it's better to see what someone has done and has proven will work than learning the hard way, (which is pretty much what I used to do before the Internet).
