I'm more worried about the noise it was making and what it could be.The cam has
only done about 4000 km and ran perfectly prior to this.
I had a cheap cam from UK go in almost exactly that time/distance. It made a noise also.

I had the same experience because I didn't run the cam in for 20 minutes at 2000rpm

As Phillip says, it is worth checking it now,

If a cam lobe has worn enough to affect a cylinder you will be able to see the lack of lift on the valves of the affected cylinder quite easily. Rotate the engine and compare the valve movement on each cylinder. Also it is likely the pushrod will be loose at the valve-closed position as the lifter will have the bottom chewed out of it.

I'm hoping its not the cam because it was fitted by a reputable landrover place in east bentleigh. And if they used a non genuine one I won't be happy.I'll do a few more checks of the head during the week and then take the whole intake manifold off.

    Update

Well its been awhile since i posted an update with the Disco. And its not good. Ive been to busy to even look at it for this long.Well i did a compression test on the passenger side head and all was not good. The first two cylinders had 120-130 psi and the back two had nothing
I sort of knew it would be one of those 2 cylinders because the plugs smelt badly of fuel. But i got more of a surprise when two of them came up with no reading. So it looks like it has dropped a valve or two I'll probably be putting it up in the markets section shortly. Not that i want to.So if anyone is interested in it let me know.
    Thanks
    Chris

Likely as not the head gasket has blown between two cylinders. I've met this before on various engines. Not a massive job, all things considered. Parts cost around $100 and a half day's work.

I might get the head off and have a look.I would rather it be that then a dropped valve I guess. Is it a common thing for it to just give up like that? The motor has done 200 000 km but is in very good condition besides this problem.

When mine did this it made all sorts of funny noises and vibrations,
and yes, good one day, bad the next.

I haven't yet met a blown gasket between two cylinders on a Rover V8 but I sure have met it on other engines. However blowing out the inside or outside is quite common. See here for a few pics etc.
