The rebuild for the Sals in my 130 has just stopped for the moment and I need some advice please.
After a good going over with the pressure washer found a repair.
As per the photos, it has had some serious repair done on cracks.Specifically across the A frame ball joint mount full depth inside across and beneath the LH carrier bearing mount
Attachment 50877
Attachment 50878
Crack tested it today and nothing shown, so the original repair seems sound. No abnormal wear on the pinion and crown same for the bearings.
I have no accurate means of checking straightness/true.
Stringline and straight edge is best I can do at home, nothing I can pick out of alignment.
Personally I don't feel happy putting all the new kit into this housing.
Thoughts/ experiences appreciated, taunts tolerated.
Cheers

Mate, is this an ex-Telstra 130 ?
I should remember but can't, but Telstra up there had a spate of failed Sals housings from overloading and driving like they were stolen. (and they had Patrols cracking chassis and 79 Series cracking front diff housings, so it wasn't just Defenders)
Most were replaced by very, very heavily braced Rover axle housings.
BigJon might know more as I think he was at Suttons at the time ?
No, its not ex Telstra. I have been in touch with the original owner and he suggested it spent most of its life at max weight before being sold to a remote property, where it just deteriorated and stopped. I am owner number 3, (if a pile of parts is called ownership)
Terry at Sutton Motors gave me a good run down on the Telstra vehicles and it seems mine has suffered the same fate in different hands.
TRS have housings available and for a my own piece of mind, think I'll just call them back tomorrow and get one. Going to add abit to the budget, but what else could possibly go wrong???..........
cheers
It'd probably be ok, but I understand how you are thinking and I'd probably be doing the same.
I'm finding it really, really interesting to see where its cracked, as I understood they were pulling axle tubes. (and might have been too)
If it is to be a (remote area) tourer I would get a new one (or new housing). For a weekend wheeler or "big lap" vehicle I would be happy to run it.
Make sure you get a 130 axle not a 110 if replacing.
Good point Ben, as the 130 uses thicker wall axle tubes.
How much does TRS want for a housing?
