    Alloy bar blackout for headlights

    Hi folks,

I have an alloy bar that reflects the headlights back into my eyes quite badly.
So easy answer is to blackout the reflecting bits.

Two options that I can see are vinyl stick on ones or paint.

Paint would probably look better if done right.
I'd prefer vinyl but am having trouble sourcing any. No auto shops here have it and the local signwriter no longer stocks it.

I'll ask around other signwriters in other towns as I can get to them.

Otherwise what would I need to do to paint them on?

    Thanks

Have you thought about using black contact? (yes the stuff you cover kids books in haha), no joke works well, I've used it to cut out some graphics and stick on, should work well, even good old gaffa tape works aswell, although the vinyl contact looks nicer.

    Cheers

I looked at black gaffa tape. It is shiny but would be much better than the bare alloy. I think it would look a little dodgy too. I might try it and it would clean up easily enough if it was no good.

Standard black contact would also be shiny but my main concern would be I doubt it is UV safe.

The required inside bends also concern me with vinyl/contact.

I honestly don't even know how this bar could be fitted legally without blackouts standard it is that bad.

I have the matte contact, so no reflectivness at all

Could always tape it up and rattle can it and then if you don't like it then it would polish off

Haven't seen the matte contact. I'll have a look.
How long have yours been exposed to the sun?
    Still look okay?

I've used black racers tape. Then just replace it when it gats a bit worn

    Etch and paint

    Hi,

My work trucks and private vehicles have all gone down the etch and matt paint on the back of the bar route. Easy to do, works well and lasts for years.

Not sure what the appeal of stick on tape is to be honest.

    Cheers,

It is a work car. I would get approval to have it done I think but it would from previous experience take months to get.
So if I use stick on something it is easily removed if someone has a whinge.
I still might paint it though and pretend it was always like that.

    Paint

    Hi.

Can see your problem. However, under any sensible O, H & S policy the work truck should have come delivered via a panel beater with the paint already there.

Actually, my organisation mandates this along with radios, cruise control, ABS, fire extinguishers, and no sideways facing seats - hence no Landcruiser troop carrier wagons.

    Cheers,
