input bearing or front layshaft bearing most likely.
if its had a cheaper clutch put in it it might also be the dampning springs in the clutch plate.
G'day all,
1st post - long time reader!
Here goes...
I have a 1996 110 Defender. Great car, just bought it. Unfortunately I have a noise from the bell-housing/transmission area in neutral, hot or cold, most obvious cold.
When clutch pedal is depressed, the noise disappears. If I release the clutch quickly, it sounds at times like a chatter, a bit like a a couple of marbles flicking around very briefly - but not always. There's a bit of driveline backlash, some of which I have attributed to worn rear axle shafts and flanges - they're on order and here soon I hope.
I recently changed the gearbox oil to a VMX-M, which isn't as good as what was in there, though it the old stuff looked old! I didn't find any metal in it and I can't recall if the oil made a difference to the noise. I am awaiting the local supplier to get Castrol Syntrans in next week, which I hope will ease the effort shifting 1-2 when cold.
Anyways, the noise in neutral is a bit of a bother... Your thoughts on the matter appreciated!
Joshua.

If you've benefited from one or more of my posts please remember, your taxes paid for my skill sets, I'm just trying to make sure you get your monies worth.
If you think you're in front on the deal, pay it forwards.
Could also be the thrust race/throwout bearing, either way it's a box out to repair/replace, Regards Frank.
If the clutch plate is new(ish) and the springs are tight, you can get gear chatter when in neutral too.
Nothing wrong with it, it's just annoying.
BTW, Syntrans will change the shifting for the better compared to VMX![]()
yeah, was thinking that... It appears the list of things 'to do' is growing longer and more complex. Wife will not be pleased!
I hope that it will keep going for a while yet before karking it. If it is a bearing, are failures sudden and without further warning, or am I safe to see-how-she-goes? Obviously I don't want to damage her.

Like Rick says ^^, Wouldn't worry too much, I have several customers with neutral chattering R380's that have been that way for 7 or 8 years.
Mostly the early ones up until 1998 suffer from this, using syntrans may or may not reduce the chatter, it is caused by mainshaft endfloat not being exact. The absence of metal in the oil or a bronze sheen to it means that on the whole the trans is healthy. The Syntrans should help with the 1-2 shift, it is a great oil.

The Isuzu 110. Solid and as dependable as a rock, coming soon with auto box😊
The Range Rover L322 4.4.TTDV8 ....probably won't bother with the remap..😈
JC, mine started chattering/rattling when I fitted the new B&B clutch 80,000km ago, and hasn't changed between ATF (for 1/2 a day), Torco RTF and now Motul Gear 300 fluids.
I've noticed Dave Ashcroft mentions this too on their website with new clutches and re-built R380's, and it's just one of those things.
as per above, not that unusual. I can sometimes get it a bit quieter by putting the box into and out of gear, it doesn't always work.
I am not ready to rip it out to try and fix it, when I do it will be for a K box upgrade instead of the J that is in there.
The greatest amount of backlash was fixed when the input gear to the transfer case gave way. I don't know if the 96 box had been cured of the dry spline (poor lube) issue, by now you box will have had a repair done if it did not already come with the drilled gear to improve lube. Could be that someone caught the problem before it gave way but still resulted in some wear on the output shaft of the gearbox. Someone will know when they started putting drilled transfer case input gears in.
Well that's reassuring to hear! It does sound like chattering and other than the shoddy shifts between 1 and 2, (and the backlash,) the transmission sounds fine.
I'm pretty particular about my cars, so i'll keep an ear on it, but I can live with it, so long as it lives with me. My fear out here is a total failure, which is not desirable.
Thanks for all the great responses. I really appreciate it.
Joshua.
