Hi,
Battery University is a good site for info.
cheers
My reading has left me thoroughly confused on the better deep cycle battery choice for my intended application to be located in the back (bin) of my D2a. I know that the gels are reputedly the bees knees and only slightly more expensive than AGMs. I have heard that the AGMs are more "robust?" (read idiot proof?) and better for in accepting high charge rates, but not sure if that is valid info.
Which is better for a 120Ah deep cycle battery that will usually help to look after the fridge/freezer and other ancilliaries, but which may be called upon to help with winching?
The system will have adequate 70mm2 cabling, switching, isolating etc.

Hi Gavin, my understanding is that deep cycle batteries are not good at supplying large amounts of current in a short time, such as needed when winching. This sort of demand would probably damage them. They are ideal for running lower demand items like fridges and lights and will be able to do so for quite a while before needing recharging. Cheers, 130man.

One of the best battery sources in Oz…
Hi Gavin and 130man is on the money.
You will either need something like a spiral wound AGM, such as an Optima YELLOW TOP, or a dual purpose battery, a marine type battery.
Most standard AGMs are not suited to winching and personally, I would not trust a gel as far as I could kick one.
A dual purpose marine battery would be the cheapest option.
BTW how are you planning on connecting this battery up for winching?
I've got a SSB 130Ah AGM as my aux battery. Only had it for about 6 months so can't comment on its longevity, but very happy with it so far.
Have it set up with a SC80 controller and a manual switch that parallels it with the start battery for use as an emergency jump start or for winching. Mainly it just runs the fridge and a couple of other sockets for a small inverter and charging phones etc.
Its a pretty big bugger, but I've managed to squeeze it and a N70 Calcium in the battery box of my County.

my 2nd battery for running the fridge [constantly on full of drinks] is a century "marine" battery, my reason for choice was 24 month warranty over 6 month warranty on deep cycle, been going great for the past 12 months. purchased at supercrap purely so i can take it back to any store if dramas arise.
I went with a pair of Yellow Tops ... D31 for starting (900cca/75AHr) shared with a D34 (750cca/55AHr) using a Traxide USI-160.
So far it's been excellent! Both batteries are under the bonnet. Gets me around 2.5-3 days (47L ARB fridge & LED lighting)
