An email went around some clubs regarding getting shear pins made up. I'll pm the details to you in a few hours.
The shear pin in my PTO winch has, well, sheared. I believe that is what they're supposed to do.
Upon removal it was discovered it was just a ground down bolt. As shear pins are rather difficult to come by, another bolt will be going in.
Question to the brains trust:
What grade bolt would be best used as a shear pin?

Manufacturer should be able to provide the specs and replacements. I would say almost any bolt will be unsuitable as too hard grade steel. Mild steel pin probably best option if you have no specs.
Sheer pin designed to be weakest link to break like a fuse to protect the rest of the winch. I just carry 2 spares. If I break one i take a chill pill and think if I was asking too much of the winch. Cost of pin negligible to other possible repair cost.
In competition, of course anything goes.

Hi Mick
The sheer pins on capstan winches are brass and same on many other PTO, but knowing the PTO you are talking about I would think mild steel is the appropriate item.
In fact the original is actually a waisted pin making a shear section.

You won't find me on: faceplant; Scipe; Infragam; LumpedIn; ShapCnat or Twitting. I'm just not that interesting.

Then the PM I haven't sent about capstan shear pins won't be much chop...
Mick
I believe this is an original shear pin for the winch.
