    TD6 SERVICE

I had a non schedule service done yesterday on my TD6. Engine oil change plus all filters including crank case filter. Why are the filters so darn expensive? Service was over $800 including labour. Secondly is there a cheaper aftermarket crank case filter? Also a question on oils. For most of my life vehicles operated well on mineral based oils. Now they charge like wounded buffalos for synthetic oil. What is wrong with the cheaper mineral based stuff if changed regularly for a fraction of the cost? Jim

I get my filters off ebay from CLR4wd for a TD4 Freelander. The TD4 is a 4 cylinder version of a TD6. They are always cooper filters. I pay $100 + postage for air, oil, fuel and pollen filters. This is the kit I get for the Freelander Item number 251149122312. He has a phone number you can ring and ask if he does Range Rover filter kits. The fuel and pollen filters are different on a Range Rover.

There is crank case filters on Ebay for less than $20.

I have been running Castrol Magnatec in my brothers and parents TD4 and changing the oil every 10000km.
If you look on the Castrol lube reference guide, they say you can use this in a Range Rover TD6. it is around $30 for 5 liters.

Jim, check the L322 section, this has been discussed in length lately with links to cheap part supply.

at the bottom of you thread 2003 TD6 ECU garry has posted a link to the crank case filter.

Either from the UK or in BNE I use Jag and Rover spares if I need it now.

There is also a thread in the L322 section on an oil I am using. It meets the spec for this engine, and is synthetic, but if bought in 20ltr drums works out to be half the cost of some others, and it is good stuff - the brand (not this specific oil) is used a lot in large trucks, and I have a couple of deisel mechanic friends that run their own shops that swear by it.

I think the parts and oil for my last service was about $170 all up, the only thing I didn't do was the crank case breather - as already mentioned, there is a permanant replacement for this which I have just ordered.

Here is a link to the oil thread - Oil for the Rangie

    Cheers - Gav
