    Help needed

I was out playing today not pushing hard when i heard a clank

I have a S1 300tdi Disco that lost all drive to the wheels...

The only way i can get any power down to the road is to put the transfer box into CDl and even then i only have front wheel drive..

When its not in CDL i can put it in gear and the speedo will start moveing but not the truck

Does anyone have any idea what may have broken and what i need to do to fix it????

    Cheers
    Justin

If it's only driving through the front axle I'd be looking at the rear.
If there is no drive to the rear wheels then with out the centre diff in you won't move.
Your speedo works so this indicates your rear tail shaft is turning.

I'm not up on D1's but from what I've seen there are a few areas to look.
Axle end caps could be striped.
    May be a broken axle.
Or maybe in the diff itself.

    Hi Justin,

Sounds like a broken half shaft in the rear axle. How did you determine that you had front wheel drive only?

If you are unlucky, your diff has gone instead but not as likely. Do you have 10 spline or 24 spline shafts? The "older" 10 spline are weaker and known to break...

Pull each rear half shaft and see it one is broken.

    Cheers

    Oh,
If it is in the rear then without the centre diff in the hand brake won't stop the Disco either!

The way i found out i only had fwd was that only the front were spinning while trying to go up a small incline on a dirt track, fronts were spinning but not the rear..

I will pull the axels out tommorrow and look at them..

im hopeing its something in the rear and not the transfer box (again)..

    Cheers

300tdi will be 24spline axles, I suggest it has broken a cross pin in the rear diff

Did we mention that we like to see photos of broken bits.

I've broken a few rear axles and a diff in our S2a on various occasions, you always smile when it breaks at the wheel flange, anything else is hard work and usually costs more...

You've broken either a rear axle shaft or the cross-shaft in the rear differential. Second-hand diffs are relatively cheap, as are axles. Or you could take the opportunity to fit a locker.
