3rd gear is most likely what you mentioned, but also check for broken detent springs etc and worse case excessive mainshaft float. The TF case is most likely the adjustment of the engagement forks if they have too much gap where they contact the slector ring they won't allow a positive engagement, also try holding the high range lever in while you drive off at first, this usually cures the symptom of jumping out. The best thing to do is to drop the bottom cover off and measure the clearance at the selector fork to selector ring, IIRC should be about .25mm or similar? Not near my manual, Brian may be able to remember

Would broken detent springs be obvious from the feel of the gear lever, or do I need to actually look at them?

Holding the high range lever in while taking off doesn't stop it jumping out if its going to, but it does prevent it going straight through to low range.
Will check the engagement fork clearance - hopefully its just a simple adjustment issue.

Mine jumps out of high similarly to yours but only occasionally. I found if the vehicle is still rolling when changing it engages properly every time.

Thanks - I've been changing while stopped, so will try it rolling and see how it goes.

Steve, One thing to try before you get serious with 3rd gear is to remove the rubber boot on the transmission hump and make sure the gear lever is not fouling on the foam insulation block on the top of the box when 3rd is engaged. I have seen a few with this problem and it has turned out to be just the foam getting fouled on the gear lever and applying slight pressure and it jumps out when you back off, easily fixed by hacking a bit out of the foam, otherwise as JC said possibly endfloat. The transfer problem could be selector adjustment (correct JC) .25mm between rear selector and rear face of input gear when in neutral. Also check wear on engaging dogs on high range gear. If any teeth are tapered this will happen.

Mine used to jump out very rarely and only when the gearstick was being bounced about by the driving manor/ road. At this time the stick was very free to move. Replacing the foam that is just about the ball of the stick damped its movemnet and stopped this.ie As you come down the main gear lever there is a plate(576317) held by three bolts them soft washer (foam )(622387) them the sphere the the gear lever piviot on. OK - dredging up my own ancient thread as the jumping out of high range has got worse - and my wife has had enough of the swearing

Been a long time since I've been inside the LT95, so just wanted to confirm whether I can check/fix both the selector adjustment and high range dog wear just by removing the bottom cover plate, or if it needs the transfer top cover removed.
If it needs the top cover off I'll bit the bullet and drop whole thing out and fix a few other niggles/leaks while I'm at it.

Steve you can inspect the hi range gear dogs by dropping the sump plate but to adjust the selector forks you need to remove the top cover.
