    Big issues

    hi guys

as the title says i might have a big issue and expensive problem with my landy!!!
was driving to work today first i noticed on start up loads of white smoke but goes away after a minute or so. While i was driving suddenly i start hearing a knocking or clattering noise seem to be coming at the back of the engine near the bell housing!! and loads of whitish smoke coming out. So pull over turn and give her a bit of rev and smoke like crazy and knocking noise louder the throttle seem to be stuck a bit as well!! the throttle pedal was fully up but still sound its reving still with the knocking and the smoke.

Drove back home and on the way it seem to stop and drives perfect but the knocking and smoke comes back every minute or so!! Back home i check the coolant and seem fine no oil but i could smell burning somewhere around the engine. take off the oil cap and its very hot smoke coming out of it!!! Engine is off of course. temperature was normal on dash but the engine seem very hot and heater was working inside the cab so i guess there's coolant circulation!

So could it be a crack head ???? may be injector seal in which case i'll be lucky. Maf sensor ( don't think so)!!! The only modification i did was blanking the egr.

    Landy is a 2002 15P 110 with 115k miles on it.

If it's crack head how hard of a job am i looking at? could i remove it easy enough I've done it on 200tdi and 300tdi no experience with td5. What about for replacing the injector seal how easy is it to do?

any advice and help wellcome guys

    thanks

    Thierry

white smoke? not enough air, too much unburnt fuel? unburnet fuel usually results in black smoke. Check for collapsed turbo to intercooler hose, will only be apparent when the turbo is pushing air through. The hose can delaminate on the inside and cause a blockage.

Could be a leaking injector seal, how is the oil? level? smell? does it smell like diesel? is it diluted?

There is a step by step thread with photos on doing a Td5 head here on the forum somewhere. I can't recall who did it otherwise I'd have a search for it. PhillipA maybe?

Possible turbo failure, check intercooler. It will have a lot of oil in it if the turbo seals have let go.

White smoke is poor/incomplete combustion and the only time I've experienced it was due to crap/poor fuel as SWMBO insisted at the time on buying the cheapest fuel she could find.

A dose of fuel cleaner and a tank of good quality (name brand) fuel fixed it.

Sounds like a sump full of Diesel, have you checked the oil level? DO NOT keep driving it, the engine is trying to tell you something You are lucky it didn't do this [ame=http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5zx3qKX_Pno]Runaway Diesel Defender 200 TDI - YouTube[/ame]

If the sump IS overfull, IE diesel contamination, an injector Oring or cracked fuel gallery (new head req) are the likely suspects.

Check the oil level in your sump.
If there is any raise then be very concerned as it is posibly fuel leaking past the O rings or copper washer.
This in some cases has lead to the linked "runaway".

My TD5 belowed smoke when under any throtle when the turbo blew(broke the shaft).
    Symptoms where similar to yours.
Once the hose where off I could see the turbine wheel was not where it should be.
I had no raise in sump levels thankfully.

Have a look in the "The Good Oil".
There is alink to some very good "how to" head removals for the TD5.
    Cheers, Kyle

No lift pump on the TD5's.
They use a duel curcuit tank mounted 12volt pump.

Hi thanks everyone for all your advice.

I checked the oil level and it is raised I'm afraid and diluted I haven't drive her for the last 4 days I've ordered new injector seals and washer. I haven't check the turbo yet because when I checked the oil it was raised so I assume that it's either a leaking injector(hopefully) or a cracked head!!

So going to get the injectors done next week. I will keep you guys update.

If anyone could please sent me a link on removing the head, assembling the new one together and putting in back in the Landy that would be greatly appreciated thanks.

I've been looking around the site but I'm not too good at the computer thing fortunately I'm much better with a spanner .

    Thanks again so much guys

    Kind regards

    Thierry
