Thread: Defender 130 wiring loom

Someone out there might be able to throw some light on a recent issue i have had with a 96 Def 130. I kept blowing a fuse for right park light. A process of elimination resulted in determining the problem was a short within the chassis - (the loom goes through the RH chassis for all the rear electrics). I tried to pull the loom out of the chasis without success, so I found an unused wire within that loom and transferred power to it and the problem was solved.

However i have a new metal to metal 'clunk' noise from under there somewhere every time the vehicle lurches (pendulum effect) and feel that it has something to do with the elec problem. The questions are - how is the loom secured within the chassis? Could something have come adrift allowing the loom to swing and rub on chassis and short out? Probing the chassis through drain holes suggest internal reinforcement (ie - not just a rectangular chassis section).

Due to this 'clunking', i am now worried another wire will eventually short, which will probably require abandoning the loom and replacing it with an exposed one.

As far as the wiring loom is concerned, I recently pulled mine out and it just lays in the chassis.

General vibrations could cause it to chafe over the length of the loom run.
In my opinion, in the right circumstances the refitting of a gearbox crossmember bolt could potentially catch/damage the loom.

I dont think it has anything to do with your clunk.
