    cooling system 300tdi disco

    Hi all,

Just about to change the liquid in the cooling system on my recently purchased 300 tdi.
Have read the RAVE and checked posts on AULRO as well, but just want to make sure I have the right bolt to undo on the side of the engine block.see pics.

Another problem that has had me stumped for a little while is a noise coming from the rear end.
Its a clunking sound that only happens at walking pace when I first start the car after its been sitting for at least 5 hours.after a few kilometres it disappears.A mate says that the diff needs some shims in it to take up the slack. Is this a possability or is it a new rear diff that I need.

    Thanks

    cheers

If by your picture you mean the blurry bolt just behind (towards firewall) the dipstick...
Then yes that is the engine water jacket drain.

But my preferred method to drain coolant before that one is to syphon header tank into bucket. Remove 3/4in hose from bottom of header tank, covering with thumb. Move bucket under engine, pass the hose down into the bucket. Remove bung from engine and wait. Then once coolant stops remove the engine plug to drain the block.

This way with a clean bucket you can catch nearly all the coolant if you per se needed to re-use it after the annoying process of doing a refill and then finding a leak!

Oh and the clunk. Check you bushes and especially the A-frame pivot before pulling a diff.

    Roverrescue,
Thanks for that, but am doing a new refill for the radiator so I wont be needing the old coolant. The bolt is the right @ the front of the block, just in front of exhaust.

Have checked all the bushes/A frame etc and all looks good and tight back there.

    cheers

Check the uni joints on the tailshaft and note if there is any play in the pinion flange, no fore and aft or up and down play, Regards Frank.

I didn't even know there was a drain plug for the coolant on my 300TDI.

That drain bolt and roverrescue's method sound much better than what I've been doing!

Wish this thread was two days earlier when I did mine. There is no mention of the engine block drain plug in my workshop manual. Wondered why it only took eight litres.

"The bolt is the right @ the front of the block, just in front of exhaust."

Yeah thats the one. But it really is just the block drain. To fully drain the coolant to replace you need to remove something at the lowest point of the radiator.
Either bottom hose or/ the hose I mentioned above and move it down low.

The block drain uses a copper washer to seal. Either have a new washer handy or give the old one a touch up on some wet and dry before replacing bolt

This drain is particularly useful when doing a HG chage as you can lower the water level in the block below deck height easily. Makes it possible to clean everything properly

Yeah I just removed the lower hose last time, but it was a real PITA quite frankly. Your siphon idea is genius though. I'll be trying that for sure...

Make sure you unload any stress from the driveshafts when you check for play in the unis. If you just stop the vehicle and get under and try and see if there is any movement, it may just be bound up enough to feel tight. I like to jack one wheel, put the t case and g box in neutral, handbrake off (wheels on ground chocked). Easy to check the joints of the lifted end then, and even if they feel OK, throw some grease in while you are there - don't forget to grease the splines, they can clunk a bit if dry, but mainly going from fwd to rev etc. Your issue does sound a bit uni related. Good luck. Simon
