    wiring help

Non land rover related but you lot are yet to fail me with my discos problems so im looking to exploit your knowledge for a different make.

My mate is installing a bull bar to his jk wrangler (i dont understand why he drives it) and we have to wire up the indicators that are built into it. Can you just use scotch locks at the closest indicator and piggy back off that?

    Thanks

yes, certainly. as long as you dont over exceed the amperage of the factory flasher unit. but.. throw all of your scotch locks in the bin and buy some proper electrical terminals.
as soon as scotch locks see dirt, water, sun, air, snow, dew, cold, warm, dark, or anything other than the container they come in... they become a right pain in the arse. the dont make a proper connection and drive you stupid

Scotch locks are an invention of the devil, the cause of many an electrical problem. I hate them. May I suggest they are entirely suitable for a Jeep?

im not a auto-electrician but i am a electrician, if you wire the bullbar indicator lights in parallel with the existing (piggy back) it should work fine. however scotch locks are useless lol if you want a good solid connection that will stand the test of time you should solder it!!

Land Rover wiring gauge (at least in my Classic) is so .... economical... that scotchlocks are'nt small enough to make a reliable contact. - Even INside the cab. (Don't ask!)

    No scotch locks.

NO soldering (fine for stationary stuff) but in a vehicle the wire will fatique fracture at the end of the solder, Properly made crimp connections are the way to go.

IF you are going to go soldering put in some decent cable relief past the solder joint, typically I use a thick wall heat shrink or double heat shrink.

wound up just soldering it up and using heat shrink to cover it all up nicely. Only issue now is we hooked it up to the side indicators on the wheel arches which we found out soon after are a solid light when the head lights are on as well as acting as indicators. Stupid jeep rubbish. It'll do for now as we need it in one piece for tomoz.

Thanks for all the input, I bet all those jeep owners out there just wish there was a comunity like this one with their cars.

    Cheers

thats why you use crimp connectors, just disconnect them and then you have connections ready to use when you want to add in extra marker lights and you've already done half the work for fitting them to the indicators
