    Dual mass flywheels

What is the advantage of a dual mass flywheel over the conventional single unit? It seems there is a problem with clutch plate longevity with dual mass.

    Reduces gearbox problems.

    Dual mass flywheels

The dual mass flywheel, or DMF, eliminates excessive transmission gear rattle, reduces gear change/shift effort, and increases fuel economy.
    ... ... ... ...
The function of the dual mass flywheels is to isolate torsion crankshaft spikes created by diesel engines with high compression ratios. By eliminating the torsion spikes, the system eliminates any potential damage to the transmission gear teeth. If the dual mass flywheel was not used, the torsional frequencies could damage to the transmission.

The original flywheel and clutch in my TD5 110 was replaced at 345,000 kms.

I guess it comes down to how hard you work the clutch and driving behaviour. I can't take credit for the age my clutch, previous owner had it for the first 300,000 odd kms.
