    When I was living in Melbourne, I bought a brand new car in Adelaide.

    The dealer got a 14 day permit, and I drove it home, no plates, and a just a permit stuck to the window.

    When we got to Melbourne, I went to Vic Roads just before the permit ran out and told them it was a brand new car, here is the permit, bill of sale, receipt etc. Young bloke turned around and asked for a roadworthy certificate.

    Just as my jaw hit the ground, the supervisor came over & said, not to worry. Just register it as a new car, which, it was.

    Only thing Vic Roads forgot to do, was to charge me the Stamp Duty. I didn't pay it in Adelaide, as it is only paid with the rego. Vic Roads didn't ask, and I didn't offer.

    I've done it twice NSW->ACT.

    Just watch out for the inspections. Be ready for lengthy conversations about about any mods, including non-standard wheels.
