    Td5 Disco wont turn over

Went to start the Disco today. Got maybe a bit of a turn, a big 'clunk/thud and nothing more. Second try of the key and no movement at all.

Had been steadily losing coolant for the past few months and hadn't been able to find an external leak.

A little grumbly starting for some time but always ran well after a few seconds of roughness. And ran well with good fuel economy and power.

Any ideas would be appreciated - I'm going to get it on a flat top to a workshop anyway.

been loosing coolant with no external leaks, clunk thud then no more turn over, sound like it may have hydraulic locked with coolant in the cylinder

    DON'T PANIC!! :-)

G'day Mate. Despite my numeous expectations of the worst case scenario with my D2. None have, as yet, materialised!
Have a look at the starter motor solenoid. What you described could just as likely bedegraded contacts in thesolenoid. The thud is the solenoid engaging, but the lack of contact fails to power the starter.
15 minutes to check, don't even need to remove the starter.

What's the battery like?? (It may sound stupid and simple, but you'd be surprised!!, we rebuilt my tdi after I drowned it because the motor seemed tight, but I had just killed the battery winching it onto the car trailer!!)

Always check the simple things first!

So what do I do? Put a socket on the bolt in through the crankshaft pulley and try to move it. Which way does it turn or does that matter?

    thanks

I generally use the alternator bolt and turn in the direction of rotation.

IF it wont turn over its locked.

in a manual you can do the same thing by pushing it in gear.

(4 people and 5th will do)

Is there a 'usual' prognosis if it is locked?

    Arrow not seized

it is a battery or starter motor hicup. the motor would not seize after switching it off.
