How deep fitted depth of crankshaft seal V8?

I replaced the crankshaft seal whilst I did the sump gasket.
The new viton crank seal was very hard to get in, any way got it in, but it sat deeper than original.
How much is acceptable, rave doesn't give any details?
do i pull it and replace with new one or all ok.?

As long as it fits in the hole in the timing case square, it can really be fitted at any depth.
I am referring to a V belt 3.9 . I have measured the crank pulley vs the timing cover and really if its not pushed right through it is OK.

I get varying successes with viton front timing case and crank pulley seals. I sometimes revert to the older neoprene when such sealing issues arise.

In any case the object is to make sure the seal is square in the case and you haven't got it positioned where the seal lip might run on any tram line that might have been worn on the pulley stub by the old seal.
Its is also advisable to "dull" the pulley stub seal surface with a scotchbrite pad or some 100 grit emery tape.
This gives the seal lip(s) something to "bite on" and explains why new components are often gas vapour blasted to aid seal bed down upon start up.

I use engine assembly lube which has a lithium grease base, but may just use engine oil to lube the component to avoid seal lip damage.

sorry Phillip, I was refering to rear crank, the main seal. Rave says fit dry.

    Interesting about the lube,

Rave for Disco 1 V8 says "use engine oil" on the seal.

Then contradicts it in Rave Disco2 V8 says to "fit dry"

I had a mate that worked for tech pubs div in England for B/L who never got some things right!

In any case conventional wisdom suggests you lube the seal upon installation. That stated I have seen some seals arrive in LR packets that have grease applied to the seal. Perhaps that's why it states don't re-lube it.
    Who knows!
