Transfer lever position, short stick vs long stick.
This could be a quick or complicated answer.
Did the position of the transfer lever (LT230 or BW) move between the long stick gearboxes used in rangies until ~1986 and all defenders vs the short stick used in rangies from 1986 and all disco 1's?

As long as you are not referring to LT95 or LT85 - In relation to the actual gearbox,no. However, relative to the seat in whatever vehicle, yes. There is a slight difference between how the shift linkage is made in relation to LT77/R380 gearboxes.

I guess more specifically. I have one which was originally LT77/LT230 long stick and one which is ZF auto with BW.
Would the transfer lever positions match up and allow original centre consoles to be used with the same transfer lever? I will be changing the actual gear lever, so they can be ignored.
The only place I can think to measure from is the join between the transfer and gearbox housings. I don't have either stripped down enough to do that and won't for some time.

The long stick and short stick LT77 have their levers in different positions. IIRC it is enough to mean modifying your floor plan to do the swap. I recently went through the early/late swap thing with my 84 / 88 RRCs.

Thanks Paul. Do you still have them out to measure or photograph?
I will be in the rather unique situation of building a linkage and LT230 lever mounts anyway for another gearbox to fit in the short-stick position. I'm trying to get an idea upfront of just how much pain I am in for and how much it all has to move from the original locations.

I have found some good pics of the LT77 short stick here: Land Rover Defender Discovery LT77 Gearbox and Transfer box tested all works | eBay
The transfer lever position looks pretty close the (originally) long stick one I have here. It's now grafted to an Isuzu MSA.
