the oil preasue was 40-50 psi cold before and after a hard run up a hill it would drop to 13-15 idle till the coolent came down than it went back to 20 again. at anything over 1000 rpm it would stay at 40-50 psi at any temp, now with the new new cam after the timing cover came of it has none a idle but comes up at any thing over 1200rpm the oil pump was drained so we packed it with vaso and made a new gasket for the base plate which was all fine but the original gasket was .3 mm and the new one is .33mm but that wouldnt afect it that much , could the oil releif valve be blocked with a tiny bit of old gasket or that may have sliped into the front of the sump, we also primed the pump with the drill at 3800 rpm for about 1 min and it made preasure aswell

You need to replace the gasket with an original to acheive correct clearance, as I said excess clearance = low or no oil pressure.
Oil relief valves, usually a small piston controlled by spring pressure can wear and jam in the open position, letting oil cycle back to the sump, so check out if yours is worn, but first replace that gasket, regards Frank.

Get yourself a sheet of 180 grit wet and dry, find a sheet of glass or similar flat surface apply a little oil to the sheet and rub the surface of the oil pump gears cover against the w&d and continue till all signs of wear are removed, check with a straight edge for flatness, Regards Frank.
