    Replacement airflow sensor

Is there an alternative airflow sensor that can be fitted to a 97 disco 3.9L V8. The original being hard to source and ridiculously expensive. Have found an ebay one but unsure of quality

or second hand. Could end up with same problem or is there something from another model another car or a general fit anything type replacement available.

If you look at the Rpi site there is a "how to" to fit a 38A MAF. It is a bit complex and you have to be a reasonable DIY person and confident to cut wires at your ECU.
Remember you will also have to figure out a new way to mount the MAF and buy hoses etc .
IMHO there is nothing wrong with the Hitachi MAF on 14CUX cars . Mine has done 220K with no problems. Jaguars also use this MAF as do Saabs around that period and quite a few Chevs do also..
Have you actually cleaned and tested your MAF to see if it working? It is quite simple to do as you place a multiumeter on the terminal nearest the engine AFAIR and see if the voltage chages as you rev the engine.

MAF's can not be tested this way. 0.1 volts out of spec will give a lean or rich stall at idle. Lack of performance else where.
You also need to test the reaction of the MAF - usually seen as a gulp as the throttle is initially opened. Poor reaction time leads to flat spots.

The only way I know how to test a MAF is MAF against TPS while monitering O2 sensor reaction.

But if the voltage doesn't move you know it is dead.

And D1s do NOT have O2 sensors, so a bit problematic looking for O2 sensor output.

Those cheap mafs are made in china, I used to stock them, and only had 2 with problems. So stopped supplying them. I doubt they are OEM as seller claims and made in his factory.
They are chinese knock offs, I used one on my one disco1 without problems, still cheaper than the reco jobs avail here.

Do now . Cheers bee utey
    Cheers for the input guys.
After replacing ignition coil I lost a severe miss once at operating temp. Fine for a day then picked up a slight miss under light load which got worse the next day. I disconnected the airflow meter as a possible cause and as luck would have it No more miss, which is why I was inquiring about the aftermarket airflow meters. But now after 2 days general round town driving I have a severe miss again which must depend on the discos mood cos after several attempts at running it almost rectified itself (running 6-7 cylinders rather than maybe 4 or 5) for about 4 seconds before almost totally dying. Reconnected airflow meter and no change so it now looks like either a distributor replacement or maybe its the dreaded spyder playing up??? This really is a temperamental old thing.

Do you know that when in "limp home" with MAF disconnected The ECU will not recognise the MAF and go out of limp home until shut down, de energised and restarted.

Limp home mode is also ridiculously rich running, I experienced it for the first time about two weeks ago (I have the 20AM and had a AFM fault twice in one day).
    I rule!!!

    2.4" of Pure FURY!!!
