Range Rover classic without ABS.
Hi,
Just want to find out which Land rovers have 4 tonne towing capacity...?
I've heard Discovery series 1 and Range rover Classic's are able to tow this much. Is this correct? Is it only for certain year and spec vehicles?
Cheers

You won't find me on: faceplant; Scipe; Infragam; LumpedIn; ShapCnat or Twitting. I'm just not that interesting.
The 300Tdi Defender 130 is rated to tow 4000kg with coupled brakes. The 110 may be as well, but I can't remember.

Both the Owners Handbook and the Australian supplement for my 110 County a GCM of 6950 and a GVM of 2950, giving a towing mass of 4000. From the Australian supplement ;-The cab/chassis with a GVM of 3200 has a GCM of 7050, so towing mass is only 3850. The 6x6 has GVM of 5500 and a GCM of 7050, so a towing mass of only 1550.
The Australian supplement notes that "These values do not authorise use outside the legislation", but my understanding is that most, if not all states now authorise whatever the manufacturer does. Probably all Defenders have the same towing limit, although this may vary, so you need to check the specific model.
These figures do not mean the towbar you have is approved for that mass either, although I don't think tow bars required approval at all until the 1990s.

John, I think you will find the Defender xtreme and puma with ABS are restricted to 3.5T The current model most certainly is. http://assets.config.landrover.com/v...6_a-towing.jpg http://www.uktow.com/towing%20capacity.asp'make=Land%20Rover
More than that, the tow bar and ball/coupling also have to be rated to 4T or the weight you wish to tow.

My 95 Disco 1 V8 has 4 tonn but my mates 96 with ABS was down to 3.5 I have a HR bar to suit the 4000kg.
Cheers
While these vehicles may have a 4t tow limit they all have a low tow ball weight - I think around 120kg.
