I would be draining the fuel filter to check for water first, then disconnect the EGR and go for a test drive.
Cheers,
Tim
Had a ride in a Puma recently and it had a light rattle coming from the engine especially just light throttle openings. Trying to pull away from lowish speeds in say 3rd resulted in a much deeper rattle which disappeared as revs increased.
Any ideas what this could be?
I'd like to know in case my own Puma ever develops what could be a "death rattle"!![]()
Cheers.

Mine does the same especially under WOT at low revs is sounds like it is pinging. This has been checked by 3 different Land Rover dealers as well as the surging in low or trailing throttle in the lower gears. All say there is nothing wrong and this is normal. We now have 60,000 km on it (the Puma) and no longer worry about it. Also has your EGR valve started chirping on shut down? This is apparently normal as well. Once out of warranty we are looking at a performance chip and tuning it to run better but it is OK for now. Regards Flatty
Thanks Tim and Flatty. All sounds as if it's a perfectly normal Deafener so the owner needn't worry too much.
Pays to be deaf sometimes.

Common rail is the cause...high injection pressures give a very rattly noise compared to say an old Toyota IDI diesel...
The noise is most prominent at around 1800rpm on slight throttle, light loads once revs pick up the noise is counteracted by other engine/land rover noises![]()
every one knows its only a baby engine and needs a rattle.

If you think you're in front on the deal, pay it forwards.
I've been known to say it about pretty much every engine thats got a capacity that does not begin with a 3 and ending in L

My 2010 110 has the same rattle, I would suggest that it is rail presure.
Had mine back to the stealers 3 times and they still tell me its normal?
My wifes 2011 D90 does not have he rattle? So why is it normal.
They have re flashed the ECU no change. I am looking to get a new program from Bell Auto Services to see if that quietens it down.

Hi Harold. I'll do the same with mine once it's out of warranty. My mates has done around a 100K now and he says the rattles haven't changed!
Doesn't appear to be something to worry about unduly.
