    machining an axle

Just wondering if there would be any problems in machining an axle? My front longside Roving tracks axle for some reason is .5mm larger in diameter than the short side and won't fit through the swivel housing. Waiting on a reply from Keith, but thought I'd ask here as well.

    Any thoughts?

perhaps your swivel housings are different, does the long axle fit thru the right swivel housing , or is the right side already assembled.

    No problems machining the axle.

The only ones that normally have this problem is the PRE Defender 110's for some reason. My Defender and all the others I know of have been fine.

I recall DaveS had the same issue.

I believe he bored the swivels.

doesn't fit through either swivel, short side fits through both. Put the vernier on it, and definately larger diameter.

thought of that, but IF i ever get stuck somewhere and need a swivel, i'm stuffed, can easily source another stock 24spline axle though

You will be able to machine it using tungsten or diamond lathe tools [I have done the same with longfield CV stubs]. You need to check if the axles are case hardened or through hardened though...

Most axles are case hardened and if you reduce diameter you will remove the hardening and it will need to restored after machining. When I use to have axles shortened (for drag racing) the machinist would heat axle and leave to cool in Lime powder till cold, which softens the metal, he would then cut to length and respline and re-case harden.
Is there a reason you can't use a standard size (dia.) axle, would save a lot of dough, Regards Frank.

Because I bought rovertracks after market axles and it should have fit, but for some reason its slightly larger diameter than than the other one. I don't want to machine anything. I have stock axles but that's not what I want.
