I agree with your assumption Pete, more shim.
Cheers, Mick.
Looking at the not great image below am I correct in assuming I need to increase the pinion height (as in add more shims)
I am trying to do this without the pinion height gauge etc as it hasnt arrived and I need the locker back in before tommorow! It doesnt have to last that long so I am not hugely worried if I don't get it 100%
It's quite slow going having to keep taking out the bearing to change the shims so I want to double check I am heading the correct way!

Thanks Mick.
The contact marks should be around a 6mm from bottom of tooth to just over half way up the tooth, your marks would be described as Heel contact+ insufficient backlash, I'll see if I can scan a copy of the manual and PM it to you, Regards Frank.
"A" is the pattern you want, regards Frank.

Yep, thanks, exactly what I did Dave. 4 goes in the end to get the pinion height correct.
It's all fitted. Im still not super happy with how it feels tbh, but it only needs to last this weekend really. reverse feels fine, but forwards feels a bit rough... anyway I have just done a few k's and got it over 110 and it seems to be quiet at least.
First one I have ever done and the crown wheel is chipped on a couple of teeth so if it breaks I am not hugely worried. I didnt change the carrier bearings either, only the pinion ones so all up in parts its only cost me about $80 to try it.
Rgds
Pete
that sounds like the wheel is now a touch off spec to the pinion.
on the rover diff usually a couple of slots either way on the bearing mounts will sort it.
theres also the outside chance that the preload on the pinion could be wrong, did you do the rolling resistance check prior to dropping the center back in?

Just to update this, I put it back in, and did about 800km in it this weekend, including on a day of 4wding on my big tyres at Manar Park and it was quiet and didnt break!
I say you nailed it then.
