Why not just use the shaft out of a 727 torqueflyte RRc. It's made of solid shafting instead of tube.![]()
I thought I'd just post a few pics and bits about a RRC that a customer has brought to me to fix up to roadworthy condition.
It's a 1980 4 door with a Holden 308 carby engine and Turbo 700 trans adapted to a LT230. It has a 2" body lift and was originally from Victoria.
It's main problem was a bent front drive shaft from where it fouls the edge of the trans pan under full travel. It got a "new" shaft out of Volvo bits.
Long ago I found out that certain RWD Volvos run the same size flanges as the LR. So I've kept a stack of them for this kind of thing. The front shaft was replaced with a 4 cylinder Volvo auto shaft with only some flange swapping and shaving needed.
The centre bearing was removed and the splined yoke removed from the old rear portion and refitted to its flange. The register of the flange is slightly wider than the LR one so was filed down until the flange faces were flush to the diff and transfer flanges. This shaft is the same 2" diameter as the RR one and quite strong, but if it gets bent again I will have to make it a 1" solid shaft section instead.
Down the back the slip yoke was worn out so I shortened a V6 Volvo shaft to match:
Today's job is to remove the gas tanks from the highly modified rear chassis area. The tanks hold 68 and 56 litres and complement the two sill tanks for the petrol system. The chassis has been widened to 960mm between the rails. This must have been an expensive thing to certify, as the owner says he has the papers from Victoria with it.
Luckily this vehicle avoided going over the pits on coming from Victoria, so it should survive for a while as SA hasn't got the stringent inspections of other states. The new owner will use it for a bit of gentle off roading so hopefully it will stay together for him.

You won't find me on: faceplant; Scipe; Infragam; LumpedIn; ShapCnat or Twitting. I'm just not that interesting.
In the mid 90's Range Rov Recovery in Melbourne had a gas bloke that did the chassis wideneing to accept 2 large tanks as per your photo's, cost was about $3500 if i remember correctly.

Smithys Gas Conversions in Bayswater would have done the chassis conversion. I had it done to my 78 two door. I already had sill tanks for petrol. I had 110litres of petrol and 126 usable litres of gas. My conversion was a bit more expensive because I needed the ARB rear bar moded to suit the new chassis width. I believe the guy who owned the business hurt his back and did not do any more after my one That was around 16 years ago.

Disco petrol front shafts are very thin too. To clear the cat converters.
I'm running one of these in my rangie. So cheap it was almost free and splines still tight.
