    Thermostat?

Not sure what the issue is here.

During a Simpson trip earlier in the year I was chugging along in the sand when I smelt coolant. Got out and sure enough it was boiling out of the header tank. Let it cool down and set off again with the Nanocom attached for a direct readout of coolant temp (I also have an Enginesaver alarm and a temp probe on the block). After that it didn't miss a beat for the rest of the trip, all indicators and temps perfectly normal.

Then, a few days ago, it did the same thing again.

    What's going on, sticky thermostat??

Edit: Sorry for those that don't know me - vehicle is a 2002 Td5 Defender

I reckon you're right on the money Frenchie, give it the flick, not worth risking an engine or blown up cooling system on.

Look for shiny rub marks on the old one also make sure its a bypass type thermostat (don't know if it is or not) if it should be. Someone might have replaced a bypass type thermostat with the shorter non bypass type which is a recipie for disaster.

Make sure the new one is opening before you install it. A new one I fitted before a Simpson trip was not opening and coursing over heating. I went back to the old one and no problems since.
