    Exclamation whats the best sealant for ally tank

    have just spent hours installing the water tank that was in my 110 into my camper trailer.......

    connect the hose to it and all was going well until it sprung a leak.....silly me didn't open the breather, in saying that it was only garden hose pressure

    one of the welds on top of the tank has a small split

    i'm going away for a week in two days and there is no way i am pulling this tank out to have it welded up

    what would be the best sealant to run along this seam?

    silastic or sikaflex or something else

    Are you planning on having it welded at a later date?

    If so, that might affect your choice of sealant. I don't know how silastic would affect a weld, but it creates problems for a lot of other things.

    JB-Weld is supposed to be pretty strong. Maybe it would make a permanent repair.

    I would expect anything that can cope with the vibration associated with chainsaws would probably survive on the camper trailer.

    Are you using the tank water for drinking or just washing up /showers etc?
    If it's for drinking purposes I'd suggest you use the 2-part blue/white epoxy ribbon putty. Once it's set it's effectively a permanent fix. Let cure for 24 hrs then fill the tank again. cheers

    This is the second split.....if it splits more than I'm not overly fuss as I have another 100L at the camp site and we only an hour from civilization .....the tanks been bumping around aus for the last eight years with kids jumping on it so its done pretty well

    Might start designing a poly tank

    Aluminium devcon would work but dont know wether approved for food grade applications. may contaminate weld area for future repair.used to use it in aircraft galleys etc.

    X2 Use Devcon and you will never have to weld the tank.

    Would it be wise to drill a small hole at the ends of the split first to prevent further splitting?
    Aqua need is another brand and is designed for use in water situations.
