Broken rear axle?
I went for a drive over weekend and got stuck up hill and noticed I only had drive from 1 front wheel and nothing at all from the rear, any ideas.Tried Hi and Low range and diff lock but no change, no noises were heard and could still drive home and around no with no trouble. can spin both rear wheels and will not spin front when up on stands, used to be able to spin rear wheels together and front would spin as well.
Broken rear axle?
Agreed, and easy to check. Pull your rear axles - I think you'll find a bit stays behind in the diff...
Oh, and welcome to the forum. If you ask around here (in the markets section) I'm sure someone would have a set of axles they would part with for a fair price.

Hi Dave, If I can spin both wheels on rear and it moves The opposite wheel this means the axles are ok and if I spin both at the same time and the tailshaft spins this means diff is ok, so might be something in transfer case?
Pinchy, if you hunt on here, you'll find that there's a number of similar tales, and how Rover axles "are made of cheese". It's probably preferable to have the drivetrain break a $100 axle, rather than a $1000 transfer case!
It'll take you an hour to remove and check both axles. It's worth checking the easy to get to stuff first than go straight for the biggie.
Then you would have to have been in diff lock all the time for it to even move off you drive if there was no power to the wheels on the rear.
Remember technically land rovers are only one wheel drive. If you have one wheel hanging in the air all the drive will go that wheel you will go no where. And when in diff lock is only two wheel drive if you cross axle and have two wheels in the air ( one on each axle ) then you are also not going anywhere.
Need diff lockers to make them really 4 wheel drive.

And actually test it is engaging when you think it is!
My second D1 was an example of this one, previous owner hadn't used it very much, and as such when pushed across to lock it went far enough to get the light on the dash, but not actually engage the CDL. Good clean and lubrication of linkages and clean out of crud, it actually worked again!
