On both my vehicles, I have just used a multimeter at the fuse box to find an ignition source and used that. Earth can go onto any decent grounded point. I doubt you will have any issues with interference with what you have planned.

Hello All, Happy New Year.
A little advise please, I need to hook up the UHF radio and want to put it on the ignition accessories my question is - if I tap into the earth and power wires on the radio deck will it give any interference on either the radio deck or the UHF?
Or would I be better tapping into the cigarette lighter wires?
Cheers,
Babs.

I used the cigarette lighter for my ARB compressor. For my UHF I have it wired live all the time using a Mulgo X Box so I don't need the key in a emergency.
I would wire it to a permament 12v supply, direct to the battery, via a fuse.
Saves having to switch the ignition on if you need the radio. If you loose your keys, or the ignition stuffs up out the back of no-where, and the UHF is the only means of comms that works, then being able to use it without the key could be paramount.
Even leaving a UHF on for a few days, just receiving, shouldn't drain your battery too much.
There's always been this idea that both positive and negative leads for radios should go straight to the battery to provide "clean" power without any interference, but I don't know if that's still the case with a modern car and a modern radio.
At any given point in time, somewhere in the world someone is working on a Land-Rover.
Cheers Guys

Could someone be more specific please - how to wire my Icom direct to the battery - where an what size would the fuse need to be?
It's not broken. It's "Carbon Neutral".

There should be a fuse in the power lead, close to the radio. Usually around 5 amp.
I always add another fuse at the battery end, the next size up. So 8 amp. This is to protect the cable to the radio.
You want as sort a distance as possible for this one, to give maximum protection.
