    Defender Td5 fuel tank / v8 petrol

    Hey there

I picked up a td5 fuel tank for my v8 110 project which will have a 4.4 p76 / disco 2 engine. Basically efi on a p76 engine. Anyway are defender and disco td5 pumps the same and are v8 and td5 tanks the same. Ie will a disco 2 v8 fuel pump fit in a td5 defender fuel tank?

    not without some working....

v8 and td5 are different, and in the td5 the disco and the deefer pump sets are slightly different to each other. the head stocks are the same,

I suspect that a little fiddling with the sealing rings and the pump head seal might just sort you out.

you cant use the td5 pump for the v8 theres too much plumbing.

D2 V8 fuel pump has no return line facility, they have an internal regulator and 'return'. They also run higher pressure ( 45psi at least IIRC) and have an internal filter, so not easy to replace etc.

The possibility of fitting a D1 pump assembly is there, BUT IIRC there is a very slight difference in diameters, because the locking rings are different but could be only the fact that the D1 has a different thread and is a plastic lock ring, while the D2 etc has a steel lock ring and thread is a single start. but I will have to check. The D1 pump assembly will also need to be checked for depth and whether it fits the swirl pot in the Td5 tank.

I am not certain I have both of these items here at the moment to compare them.

The TD5 Disco fuel pump will work in a TD5 Defender tank (our daughter has a disco pump in her 130) but the gauges are different. We just swapped these from one pump to the other.

When you measure the pumps side by side there is about 5mm difference in height and this is taken up by the spring when inserting the pump into the tank,

The V8 and TD5 tanks are different in the way the breathers are arranged on the top of the tank. On the V8 tank there are 4 lines going to a common point, where as on the Diesel there is only 1. I have no idea of the significance of this.

I suspect the V8 pump will also fit the TD5 tank, but am unsure.

Also, there are 2 different types of V8 pumps, one with a return line -- earlier ones (could be late Series1 Discos as well) and later D2s with only a single line to the tank

    Hi Erich

Thank you for your reply. As my car is still in its infancy and I'm still in the planning stage ill file this info for when I actually build it.

    Thanks again
