I bought a new thermostat today from MR Automotive, I was surprised to find a fairly standard looking thermostat in the middle of all the plastic, its a shame the plastic doesn't unscrew and take a $20 centre. Oh well.

There is one thing I always to to my thermostats, and that is to remove the "jiggle pin" (the little brass plug loosely fitted). I originally did this to cars that had the temp sender on the outside of the thermostat circuit so you got an engine temp reading as the car warmed up. But now I like the idea of the radiator getting a little warm coolant before the thermostat opens and sends that near boiling coolant.

I have used small vise grips in the past on this style of clip, i'll see how i go using them first.

I wonder if Giles has the same simple issue? It was his question first off.

    Cheers

    Thanks for the input everyone.
I have just ordered a new thermostat and will fit this weekend.
I hope that does fix it as I have an uneasy feeling it may be worse and be the cylinder head, will read further threads for more clues, but definately think that from the coolant residue at just about every connection, means that the coolant system is being pressurised more than normal.
I will change the oil too, and (check for diesel!)

    Regards,
    Giles

KISS! Reckon it is probably the sender wiring. Happened to me on a sort of year or so basis. Just take the plug off and replace, give the wiring on the sender plug a bit of jiggle and hopefully your uncle's name is Bob. A bit of extra resistance at the plug throws the reading to the computer off!

    Cheers

I did consider the sender, I did give it a tap and disconnect and reconnect the connector on it and a spray with some RF connector solvent, but its still the same. Whats interesting with mine is it reads the correct ambient temperature when its cold.

I'm going to attempt the thermostat change first, as I have already bought one.

    Cheers

Removing the inner wheel guard plastic shroud helps make it easy.

I changed the thermostat this morning,
I removed all the top covers, and the fan and then the fan shroud. this gave me access to all the clamps + buckets under the car to catch coolant.
all went surprisingly easily. does need a range for plier types to get at the clamps, shows how important it is when refitting to align the clamps right for next time!

refill coolant (bleeding the air out).

Back in for wash hands and quick update, now time to take it rounf the block

    regards,

    Giles

I replaced my thermostat today too, I refilled with new OAT coolant, only did a quick test drive maybe 10km at a stretch, got the temperature up to 83, on the nanocom, and that 10 degrees more than what it's ever been, once it got to 83 it fell back a little to 81, I assume that's the thermostat starting to open. The ambient temp was only 22 and rain. The old thermostat still works but must be opening early, it is stamped 12/2002 so has lasted a while.

Now to continue with the EMS2 install.

    Thumbs up

Done quite a few short trips since Saturday (thermostat change day) and it has been behaving really well ( melbourne has been mid thirties every day).
Temp gauge is settling down promptly at 3 oclock. so now its time to order an engine saver and do some checks to make sure the cylinder head and gasket have not been compromised.

That's great Giles, my temperature runs at 80-85 degrees now (according to the nanocom) and my gauge sits at 3 o'clock all the time (once it passes 70 degrees)

Out of interest did you test your old thermostat? Mine appears to work correctly (using Boiling water) I guess it must just have been opening early.
