    Starting trouble Defender Td5

    G'day all!
Today, for the second time, the truck (Defender Td5, 2001 MY) didn't want to start. That is, I inserted the key and turned it, all electrics working, even the fuel pump, but the starter motor didn't. I tried everything, lock and unlock with the fob buttons, to no avail. I even tried with the second set of keys, the result was the same.
I had a similar situation a while ago, when I simply did the lock/unlock-thing and everything worked fine ever since. Until today, that is.
I finally managed to get the truck started by letting it roll backwards (as I had stopped on an incline), then letting the clutch go and having the momentum of the truck turn over the engine a few revs. After this, it started directly by turning the key.
Any suggestions, please! I am somewhat anxious to use the truck now as I don't want to be left stranded in the middle of nowhere with only plenty of snow around me.

    Ta, mate!
Good grief, this does mean the starter motor has to come out, right? Bother. Not quite the time for working on the truck, bl**dy chilly right now. Any advice to give, other work to do whilst being at it anyway? Is there any chance of getting the thing going when it won't start the usual way?
Will have to sort that out soon!
    Cheers

I have a similar trouble in my 04 Td5 Disco.
periododicly I turn the key and it just clicks once.
I have narrowed it down to the earth onto the starter.
I just undo the nut, take off the wire, clean the thread on the starter with a wire brush, give it a squirt of wd40 put it back on, and its good for a few months!
    hope this helps.
    Cheers.

take heed of the landrover/lucas predicament.

do I park on a hill in case the starter fails or do I park on the flat in case the handbrake does?

There is some shonkieness that can be done but its pretty risky. (short the + feed to the signal wire then short the + feed to the alternate contact to the motor to get it to wind over. set the ignition to on first)

As has been said I be placing money on the soliniod contacts being worn.
Leaking fuel regulators have been known to effect the soliniods too.

Have a read of this thread, seems to have all the information including a tempory repair
