    Hybrid prop shaft Q.

    Hi all,

I own a disco 1 and have just purchased a "disco 2 (dbl-cardinal) prop shaft" as I have 3" springs with 4" shocks and im finding that my UNI's bind under full flex. Also I think that my prop shaft is a little bit damaged, so due for replacement.

I have done some research and found that I should also grab the flange from the disco2 transfer case to match the prop shaft as they are different, problem is the wreckers don't want to wreck the transfer case.

ok, so, I have done some further research and found that the UNI's for the D1 prop shaft are the same part number as the uni's for the double cardinal shaft.

*does this mean I can just dis-assemble my current prop and just swap around the end? (the part that bolts to the transfer case flange)

Therefore enabling a discovery2 double cardinal prop shaft to bolt directly to a standard discovery1 LT230 transfer case.

    has anyone else attempted this?

    Thanks in advance,
    Jarrod.

The D2 double cardin UJ is all about minimising vibrations etc. It's not about big lifts.

You need wide angle UJs for big lift & big wheel travel. But unless the flange angles are set up properly, you'll have horrible vibrations getting to your destination.

So, look into slotted hubs, look into cranked arms, and build in the DC UJ as part of your front end package.

FWIW I don't run cranked arms, but do run slotted hubs & the stock D2 shaft.

    Regards

    Thanks Max,

interesting you mention the hubs... I actually have a set of swivel hubs sitting there freshly rebuilt with seals and bearings ready to take down and get slotted (on the list of this weeks tasks)
I will also be drilling a new hole somewhere between the slots so I can install a locking bolt and nut.
I don't want to use castor correction as it creates an even more severe UJ angle (been there, done that)

I have always had (very)-mild drive line vibration and the prop shaft is next on the list. considering I picked up this dbl-cardinal shaft for only $150 I figure I might as well use it.

I figure this hybrid prop procedure may be more desirable as for most who do this conversion usually have there old shaft available and not necessarily a donor d2 lt230 to go with their new shaft.

    cheers.

    Hybrid prop shaft Q.

The D2 hub is cheap genuine.

3" lift works fine with a DC shaft from a D2.

ok thanks and agreed. I guess im already ahead with the price I picked up the prop shaft.

...I will have another crack at them tomorrow regarding the flange before I buy a new one.

they are used to my haggling, half of them hide when they see me coming

Karcraft sell the D2 front input flange assembly for under $100 and this will fit up to the D1 LT230 transfer box

If someone has a pic, I think I have a spare you can have. I can't compare to mine as it still at the panel beaters.

Alrighty, all good. I went in today, showed a little leg and got the 2nd hand flange for $20 ...so thats $170 for the lot. im pretty happy with that, although, this does still leave the question for those who are interested in converting the double cardinal to suit the D1 LT230.

If I have to replace some UNI's then I might press the end on from the old std D1 prop just to see whether it can actually be done.

    Thanks,
    -Jarrod.
