D2 TD5 alternator light coming on intermittently

Ok my one day old "new" 2002 Disco 2 has already disgraced itself by stopping on the way home with a flat battery caused by adirty neg terminal, which I had to cut off, and had replaced properly by a Sparky yesterday arfternoon.
Drove to work in West gosford and it is great.
Drove down to Artarmon tonight for the RR club meeting and on the Pacific hwy just before the Hotham st turnoff the battery light comes on then goes out after a few seconds, and so on several times in just a few hunred metres. AND it is on BRIGHTLY , no small voltage difference here.

So I leave early and mostly the light is out , and on at brief periods. same on F3 .

The pattern seems to be as the engine drops under about 1800RPM the light comes on and stays on until I accelerate away.

BUT THE TACHO STILL WORKS?????? and AFAIK the tacho is driven by the alternator as with earlier models.
One theory is that the exciter wire has fallen off and is grounding intermittently or another is that the brushes are sticking, but see tacho above.
So anyone had a baffling turn of events such as this and suggestions please. I will now have a look at Rave but I have a feeling it is something wierd. The light is on permanently now for about the last 2 Km home , but may not be permanently permanently on.
Could it be an open circuit in the old battery?
